Role of Phloroeckol & Phlorotannins in Preventing Skin Aging

7-phloroeckol is a phlorotannin isolated from a marine brown alga and has antioxidant properties. Phloroeckol and phlorotannins are among the fascinating phenolic compounds in sea mosses species with anti-inflammation, antioxidant, antiallergic, and anti-wrinkling characteristics. Ageing is a natural phenomenon which causes physiological skin changes. As a result, aged skin is usually drier, has an uneven texture, wrinkles, and decreased elasticity and volume. Phloroeckol and phlorotannins have been shown to have antioxidant activity, which can help to prevent skin ageing by protecting the skin from UV radiation and delaying the natural physiological ageing process. Phloroeckol and phlorotannins avoid skin ageing due to the presence of the following features in it:

Provide photoprotection

Phlorotannins have qualities that make them an excellent functional ingredients in cosmeceutical products. Phlorotannins have anti-wrinkle and skin antiaging properties due to the inhibition effect of hyaluronidase activation.

  • Phlorotannins isolated from E. cava and E. stolonifera provide photoprotection against UVB rays by lowering cell damage induced by UVB radiation. In addition, it was demonstrated that antioxidant properties prevent UVB-induced oxidative damage and improve cell viability.
  • Based on the sun protection factor and UV-A protection factor, phlorotannins isolated from Halidrys siliquosa have sunscreen properties. It was also discovered to have excellent antioxidant properties and the capacity to kill microorganisms.

Stimulate collagen production

Collagen is a significant protein responsible for the repair and renewal of the skin. Phlorotannins aid in the production of collagen and keratin in your skin and strengthen and give elasticity to your skin, preventing wrinkles and making it look smooth and healthy.

Provide moisture retention

Maintaining skin moisture is vital for skin care since it enhances the texture and makes it healthier and younger. Phlorotannins may help prevent hyaluronic acid degradation by inhibiting the enzyme HAase, which has been associated with skin ageing. Phloroeckol and phlorotannins polyphenolic compounds have the highest water retention capacity and can be used as a humectant and moisturizer in cosmetics.

Inhibition of free radical formation

Free radicals cause breaking down skin's collagen, resulting in wrinkling, unflattering skin blemishes, loose, saggy skin, and dark spots. Phlorotannins and Phloroeckol have been shown to suppress tyrosinase activity and free radical formation under high-energy radiations, suggesting that they could be used in cosmeceuticals as anti-ageing. In addition, phlorotannins are thought to have antiallergic properties because they are potent inhibitors of histamine release.

Final Thoughts

Overexposure of human skin to various environmental stresses—such as UV and pollution- increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to various skin-related issues such as hyperpigmentation and premature ageing. Thus, in marine brown algae, secondary metabolites are biosynthesized by Phlorotannins and Phloroeckol, providing barriers under stress conditions. Furthermore, because of their excellent skin protection capabilities, these biologically active components in seaweeds pave the door for their usage as an active ingredient in cosmetics to prevent skin ageing.
